From the refinery process, there are thousands of materials are made which are used in many things in daily life.

In the past people used natural materials so that their vehicles worked better, today’s motor oil and lubricants factories use base oil and additives for production.

Base oils are mostly used in automotive products.

Two types of base oil:

  • Virgin base oil
  • Recycle base oil

What is recycled base oil?

Today, the process of refineries produces a substance that is used in many aspects of our lives. In this method, used oil is returned to the production cycle as a raw material for reproduction, which is done through a filtration process that removes suspended particles and insoluble impurities from it. In the process of producing recycled base oil, impurities, and contamination are removed from the used oil. Then the final product can be used as a new lubricant for industrial equipment lubrication.

The main components of base oils are naphthenic, paraffinic, and aromatic, of which the most common and widely used is paraffinic.



What are the used oil recycling methods?

Used oil or burnt oil refers to any oil that has been refined and consumed from crude oil or any synthetic oil. which is polluted with physical or chemical impurities as a result of consumption. During normal use, Impurities such as dirt, metal scratches, water, or chemicals can mix with the oil, so that over time the oil no longer performs well. Eventually, this used oil must be replaced with virgin or refined oil to perform its intended function.

Used oil recycling methods

Many oil recyclers use spent oil purification methods that remove small amounts of water and particles from used oil so that it can be burned as fuel. The way to purify burnt oil is different depending on the operating conditions and devices.

Refinement of used oil in the world is done with different methods, the main methods are as follows.

  • Purification system with sulfuric acid
  • Distillation purification system (non-acidic)
  • Purification system with bentonite soil
  • The use of sulfuric acid in refining petroleum products

Sulfuric acid is a chemical used to convert ethylene compounds into acid-soluble esters.

Sulfuric acid is widely used in refineries to purify white products such as gasoline and kerosene. In most chemical reactions, sulfuric acid performs the hydration action. Also, low concentrations of sulfuric acid are used to dry fruits and absorb water inside them. In addition to various hydrocarbons, crude oil contains nitrogenous, sulfurous, oxygenated compounds and metals that cause many problems such as corrosion of the device, environmental pollution, product instability, etc. during refining and consumption. Therefore, the refining industry of petroleum products is considered an important matter.

  • Distillation purification system (non-acidic)

This method is one of the new and up-to-date methods of oil purification, which is one of the green and eco-friendly industries from an environmental point of view, burnt oil under indirect heating causes oil molecules to separate from polymer particles. This is a closed method and free of any environmental waste. Oil purification by vacuum distillation method is done in two stages pre-treatment under vacuum and heat, which causes the separation of distilled fuel and water, and the burnt oil, free of any solvent and water, is sent to the second stage to separate the oil from the polymer.

  • Purification system with bentonite soil

Bentonite is a decolorizing solid material that is used in the industry to refine oils. This material is mainly used to remove impurities in oils such as mineral oils and petrochemical oils in the industry and edible oils such as rapeseed soybean or sunflower oil.

Kinematic Viscosity

Lower viscosity = faster flow

viscosity index (VI)

It is mentioned how much the viscosity of the fluid changes due to temperature.

Flash point

It is the lowest temperature at which a petroleum or oil product emits combustible vapor. Also, this property shows ignition temperature; which can determine how easily a fluid can catch fire.


pour point

The lowest temperature at which an oil is observed to flow by gravity. that oil composition, molecular structure, and refinery processes influence pour point


The density of a material is also called volumetric mass or specific mass, which is the ratio of the mass to the volume of that material. The higher the density of a material, the heavier its weight and the greater its resistance. The density of liquid products has a great impact on their quality, behavior, and application.
